John Marie Vella was born on 10 June 1862 in Malta; age 67 in 1930 census; age 77 in 1940 census.1 He married Conchetta Bonaventeur.2 John Marie Vella married Antonia Medati. John Marie Vella died on 5 July 1959 at San Francisco, CA, USA, at age 97; 7 Jul also. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, San Mateo Co., CA, USA. Biography George Pieczonka: "Grandma, Eugenia Vella, was born on the main island of Malta, in the town of Msida. There were ten children–four boys and six girls. Grandma’s father, John Vella, left Malta as a young man to find employment. He was a carpenter by trade. He migrated to Tunisia, directly across the Mediterranean from Malta. He settled in the capital city of Tunis. It was there that he met a young French woman, Conchetta Bonaventeur, whom he married. Four of their ten children, Conchetta, Jenny, Henry, and Josephine, were born in Tunis. The family then moved to Malta and settled in the town of Msida. There the following children were born: Eugenia (your grandma), Sam, Maria (who died as an infant), Robert, Michael (who died in the infantry), and finally Mary, whose mother died right after she was born. Your great-grandfather, John, then brought the family to Montreal, Canada, when Grandma was in her teens. As I understand, there was a community of Maltese people living there at the time. As the story goes, Grandpa was visiting the United States with his nephew and a friend. They then visited Montreal, Canada. I’m sure Grandpa and his companions knew of the Maltese community and may have even known someone who lived there. During their visit they stopped in a grocery store where Grandma’s brother, my Uncle Sam, was working. They met your Grandpa and his friend and Uncle Sam invited them to his home where my mother’s family was living. They must have visited Grandma’s family a number of times, or they might have remained in Montreal and worked a short while. Grandpa must have had his eye on Grandma during those visits. Grandma’s family then moved to California and settled in San Francisco, in the Bay View district. There was a Maltese community in the Bay View. I don’t know how soon after, your Grandpa then moved to San Francisco, and his nephew and friend decided to return to Malta. Grandpa also settled in the Bay View district. He then married Grandma in 1915. She was 18 years old and he was 28. Grandma also had a stepmother. Her father was married three times. As I understand, his first wife died before they had any children. He either married her in Canada or after they came to live in the United States. (Grandma did mention her stepmother favored her own children.)2"
